Oprah and Picture Book Month!

I’ve gotten more comments of “You should try to get on Oprah!” than I have royalty statements – and I’ve been doing this a decade and a half! Since the Oprah show is off the air (and didn’t anyone ever notice our beautiful O. didn’t highlight kidlit?) this is the closest I’ll ever get. And that is just fine by me because I am beyond thrilled! In addition to PBM being covered by SLJ and PW, Oprah blog writer Amy Shearn has written this lovely piece right here. Please go read it, and if we can get her a crazy number of comments, maybe we can give Amy a reason to cover more picture book issues for Oprah’s blog!

Mistakes I Make

Lots of people think I get a lot done. I do. But I also have big FAILS. I have to because I try a lot of different things. Some that make me crazy aren’t big in the long run but still, niggle at my mind and irritate me. Like, just yesterday, I made two that I put under the heading of I Should Know Better and How Could I have Done That?

I’m about to lead this webinar, and one thing I talk about is that you should keep your avatar the same across media, whether it’s Twitter, Facebook, or your site. If you have a bio picture, you should use it across the board. I just sent out my newsletter and I neglected to notice, after all the work I put into it, that my old bio pic is still in the header! That may not seem like a big deal, but if I’m not practicing what I’m preaching I kinda look like an idiot.

The other big fail was that I talk about how great QR codes are and that they’re going to be The Big Thing of 2011. I just printed up my cards for ALA but did I include the QR code that leads to the trailer for Little Chicken’s Big Day? No, I did not. Big Fail. (But yes, I spent way too much time printing out stickers with the QR code and sticking them on cards!)

But it’s okay to fail because it means you’re trying, and you’re doing a lot. So keep failing!

How to Ask for a Facebook “Like” Without Being a Dork

So I finally bit the bullet and took my own advice and started a fan page on Facebook. Thing is, I have 1100 “friends” on my personal account and not even 100 “likes” on my pro page. So how will I ask for my FBF (Facebook Friends) to go and like my pro page?

1. Now when people ask to “friend” me, I send a response asking them to “like” my pro page.

I hate doing it, but I send a message to them admitting how weird it makes me feel, but to please like my professional fan page instead.

2. (At the risk of dating myself with this reference…) Sally Field, here I come.

Yes, I’m asking you to like me, to really, really like me here.

3. I will send out an occasional status update on my personal page.

I’ll let people know who are not in my family or my “brick and mortar” friends (that is, real, in-person friends!) that I’m trying to migrate all the friends over because I use Facebook as a business tool, and would like to keep my private and public life separate. That way I don’t have to waste people’s time on my assertions that my niece is the cutest baby on the planet and other family debates.

So whaddaya think? Like it?
