In this episode you’ll hear
- me forget to mention the lovely and incredibly talented Dan Santat! I’m so, so sorry Dan!
- a Take5 Marketing Tip: reading posters
- a 100 Scope Notes review: Missing on Superstition Mountain
by Elise Broach - why you should go to ALA no matter what!
- the amazing thing Caldecott medalist Erin Stead said to me

by accident (duh, me) - celebrating Jenni Holm‘s third Newbery Honor (pictures to come in an upcoming post)
- about this year’s ALA movie (to come in the next week or two) and here is the question I asked:
You’re on the plane, about to jet off to New Orleans for ALA, overjoyed because the seat next to you is unoccupied. Just before the door to the plane is shut, the one character in the history of kidlit you would least want to sit to, enters, and sits next to you. Who is it? Leave your answer in the comments and I’ll do a random drawing to win a surprise book!
- my Ninth Ward tour with Kevin Lewis and Phil Bildner (more to come on that later in another podcast)
2. In the interview you’ll hear…
- all about Eliana’s first book, Eliana Cooks! Recipes for Creative Kids
- what’s the first step in writing a cookbook?
- and what are the next steps?
- how does a child get a passion for cooking?
- what roasted corn grits are
- where Eliana gets her chef outfits embroidered
- CIA: Culinary Institute of America (I did eat there – and it is near Poughkeepsie, but not in Poughkeepsie)
- Eliana’s signature spice

You were a great guest! I was telling a chef at a very fabulous and face restaurant here called Blue Hill at Stone Barns about you. He was very impressed.

Another wonderful podcast that made my mouth water while listening to it – this time for food 🙂 Your interview was Kid Chef Eliana was fantastic, both informative and yes, cute. I can’t wait to go out and try out her recipes. (Aren’t we all creative kids at heart anyway?) As for your airplane question, the first person that came to mind was Voldemort, but aside from him, I think I would be particularly nervous if Harriet of Harriet the Spy fame sat down next to me, if a. she was writing about me in her journal, or b. she had no interest in writing about me.

Your comment made me laugh out loud! Thanks, Eti! so glad you liked it.

The character that I would be most depressed to have to sit next to on a plane…hmm…that question made me think. At first I was thinking about Basta from “Inkheart” because that dude is nuts, but with airport security he probably wouldn’t be such an issue.
Next, I thought of Templeton from “Charlotte’s Web”. I don’t do rats. Then I realized that rats wouldn’t sit in the seats of an airplane, so that rules all gross rodents out.
In the end I thought of whose conversation would drive me crazy. I decided on Bianca from Kate Messner’s book “The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z.” Listening to an evil self-absorbed middle schooler on a plane across the county would drive me insane.
katie
PERFECT! And I love Kate Messner, so it’s lovely you give her book a shout out! Now tell me when I called you a girl. It’s driving me crazy. And also, please accept my supreme apologies!
