In today’s show:

  • A book app review from elementary librarian Mary Ann Scheuer (check out Mary Ann’s blog Great Kid books): Cinderella by Nosy Crow  Watch the adorable book app trailer below (side note – the kids dancing is too cute – and you know how I feel about long trailers? Well, I watched the whole thing, even at 2:18 long, and smiling!)

Emma Dryden and I met at a cafe in NYC and talked a long time about the business, craft, and answers to questions submitted by listeners. During the interview Emma answers lots of questions and talks about her blog, popovers the size of Emma’s head, oh, and…

  • word count
  • how to assess whether your book is ready for submission
  • SCBWI
  • art notes
  • submission guidelines
  • whether you need an agent to submit to a publisher
  • SO much more!

Loved the ambiance, relaxed chat and length (can’t get too much of Emma D!)… You have a great interview technique, Katie! Though I have chatted a little to Emma about art asides etc, I really appreciated more depth on this.
Great book app review! Nice addition to the blog.

Great interview, Katie and Emma. I listened to the entire podcast while scanning archival photos into my computer. Made the photo project WAY more fun. The information you shared is great for established authors and illustrators, and especially valuable for pre-published folks.
    Thanks to you both.

I have tasks like that…yesterday I listened to several episodes of The Moth. If you haven’t heard them, listen! True storytellers!

Hi Katie, this was so much fun. I felt like the proverbial fly on the wall listening to you and Emma chatting! I particularly appreciated Emma’s comments on speech tags in manuscripts. It’s a great reminder to ensure that dialogue, narrative, and character development all work together to eliminate the need for any ‘supporting’ speech tags. Thanks very much!

Thank you for another great podcast. Lots of good information for a wannabe author. Mary’s app review was well done too.

Wasn’t she great, Eric?! And now she’s at ALA hopefully getting some good interviews there about apps!

I loved hearing Ms. Dryden’s thoughts about indie publishing. In this evolving business, such perspectives are so valuable. Thank you for this wonderful interview, Katie.

This episode is so good, I’m listening to it twice. And, my word, you could kill someone with those popovers!

Wow, you were right – many, many nuggets of great info. Emma’s advice will be very helpful for the many authors who submit to Rate Your Story and I’ll probably link to it on the blog there when I get a chance.
Oh, and as an author who writes for many interactive app companies, I really appreciate Mary’s new App reviews! Thanks for posting.
