Podcast Subjects and Writing

I’m on a bit of a stat roll with all these comments and new listeners, thanks to the buzz created by Julie Hedlund over at 12 x 12 in 2012 so I thought I’d take advantage by asking you what kinds of subjects you would like covered on the podcast. Speak up! This is your chance to get questions answered, topics covered, tips proffered. Leave your suggestions in the comments here.
Now the writing part of that headline. I vowed (not resolved. I made no resolutions. But I did vow) to turn everything off each morning when I got to my studio, which is above my garage, and just write. A few mornings I found myself  tweeting too  long over coffee, or working out too long or — fill in the procrastination of your choice.
But once I got there, I really did turn everything off and guess what? I got hyper focused (to the detriment of some other stuff that was due…sorry New England SCBWI team who needed my program description!) and finished a very hard draft of my weird manuscript. So I encourage you to turn off and tune in…to your writing!

In general I love the in-depth author interviews the best. Especially when it gets into talking about their process and their history as far as how they got published in the first place.
Now taking your advice and turning it all off. I’ve got my 12x draft to work on.

Awesome, Julie! I turned it all off and now, end of work day (before taking Mango to the vet) I’m getting to reply!

I love chats with editors, like you are doing next week, and agents, but would also love to hear an episode on eBooks and the picture book genre. I haven’t listened to all your back episodes yet, but have you done one with a children’s poet?
I too need to learn to switch off!

Yes, I’ve done two I think. I will definitely do more, and starting next week, will have a new reviewer doing book app reviews. Take a listen to episodes #29 and 73. Enjoy!

Good idea – I have had poets on…Betsy Franco, for one. But I’ll do a bunch in April, poetry month. Thanks!

Well Katie I am a mom who at 40 has decided to do what I wanted to do all along – illustrate kidlit. So in addition to interviews with authors and editors I’d love to hear some interviews with illustrators – how they got started, becoming published, working on getting published, tips, words of wisdom etc…Thanks, these podcasts are fabulous. I’m currently downloading a batch to my iphone.

Me too! I was just about 40 when my first book was published! I haven’t had as many illustrators, true. I think it’s harder because it’s not a visual medium, but I bet I could work around that!

I love in depth interviews, too, especially of authors, editors and agents. Have you interviewed Emma Walton Hamilton, who is a successful children’s book author, freelance editor, and children’s literacy advocate? She’d be great. (She also is the person behind The Children’s Book Hub, which is a great resource, learning, and networking place online.)

I just emailed her, Beth! Thanks for the reminder…she and I had actually emailed a while back but I’d wanted to ask her on the show, so thanks! Hopefully she’ll say yes! (She doesn’t even know I’ve included her in my eBook!)

I’d love anything from editors or agents specifically interested in PBs that details how to assess your manuscripts before sending them… It’d be great to see how they evaluate each piece

Ooh. I didn’t talk about that with Emma for this week’s episode. I’ll see if I can get her to answer that in an email before I post the show! Thanks!

I meant Emma Dryden for this week… 😎 and I did get her answer so stay tuned! I also emailed Emma Walton Hamilton who said she’d love to come on the show!

If you let me know the time/date/etc., I can publicize it on Emma’s Children’s Book Hub Facebook Group, which is a group for writers and illustrators on FB. I can also publicize it on the Children’s Book Hub itself.
        Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification, Katie. Emma Walton Hamilton interviewed Emma Dryden for the Children’s Book Hub once, and hearing “Emma” “Emma” as they went back and forth was fun!

I would love to hear a podcast on time management…specifically the balance between social networking and writing. How to focus on sites etc. that will help us with our writing and with getting published and not just eat away our day. We need to support other writers and network—but we MUST write—so is there someone who has found this magic formula?
And, Katie, since I’m new to your podcasts, if this subject has already been covered, then I would love to know the episode number. Thanks for the opportunity for us to have input.

It would be cool if I could find someone who is an actual time expert. Are there such people? There’s probably an expert for everything! did you seen my answer with the details of my schedule? That’s fairly new! But it’s been incredibly helpful to my productivity!
