I don’t want any of you to be sick, but I now know what that phrase “misery loves company” means. It is somewhat comforting to know that millions of people across the country know exactly how I’ve been feeling over the last 9 days. Yes, 9. I haven’t taken that many naps since I was in diapers. The good news is that for the first time I will have seen all five of the Best Picture noms in time for the Oscars. I watched Atonement the other day with my fabulous pair of prism glasses (you can lie flat on your back and see the TV – great for someone who cannot find a comfy position after so long in bed!)
Back to Atonement. I thought it was going to be a movie about Yom Kippur, but apparently, no. At first I thought it was kind of slow and boring but I got into it, and found it very interesting after all. And it has stuck with me, and for me, that’s something. Now I’m questioning lots of things and if you have seen it, read on.

I’m going to go back and put the DVD on slo mo to check the dates, but is the whole thing a fantasy? I mean, if you know when each person died, then you’ll know at what point Briony made everything up. Did the two lovers see each other ever again after he was put in prison? How repulsive was that Briony, and what an unreliable narrator! A real interesting thing to think about as a writer!
I’d love to hear what other people thought.

February 23, 2008 - 3:39 pm ·Ha! I love your take on Atonement! I had problems with that movie. I am sure it works better as a novel… But for me it was this: The first part of the movie is a great thriller/mystery and then it goes into the war stuff and frankly, to me, got boring. And I didn’t buy the atonement — if this is all the author could do (write a new ending) well hey, that’s kind of lame. I am sure the book does a better job selling this, or maybe the author feels it’s lame.
This doesn’t answer your questions, but hey! You’re clever and thought about figuring stuff out from when people died. Yeah, I bet that’s possible…hmmm…
I am NOT sick, but a lot of Phil’s students have been getting sick and there are some vicious bugs going around. I got sick TWICE (I think it was the same bug hitting me again) this year, and I don’t get sick much.

February 23, 2008 - 4:07 pm ·So I went back and fast forwarded through and all I found was that when Briony is working in the hospital, it’s three weeks before we see whatsisname on foot in the war. I think he and whatshername did see eachother in London when she gave him the postcard, but not after that. Anyway, it was kind of frustrating.
